Unwanted hair
Laser hair removal takes patience, but gives a permanent reduction in hair. A good plan, proper preparation and regularity are the key.
What it is
Unwanted hair is hair you want to reduce permanently: on the face, underarms, legs, bikini area and other parts of the body. Shaving, waxing or hair-removal creams only work for a short time, the hairs grow back quickly and often irritate the skin.
The amount and thickness of hair is individual, but sometimes heavier hair growth is linked to hormonal disorders. If it appeared suddenly, is getting worse quickly or grows in unusual places, it is worth seeing a doctor first.
Where it comes from
- Genetics and hormones. They determine the amount, thickness and location of the hairs.
- Hormonal disorders. Hair growth can be increased by, for example, polycystic ovary syndrome or hormonal changes.
- Ingrown hairs. A common problem after shaving and waxing.
- Some medications. They can affect hair growth.
- The hair growth cycle. Hairs grow in phases, which is why several treatments are needed for a lasting effect.
How to recognise it
- Hairs grow back quickly after shaving
- Irritation after shaving or waxing
- Ingrown hairs and spots
- Dark, thicker hairs in places where you want to get rid of them
- Being tired of constant shaving
How we solve it
Laser hair removal destroys the hair follicles, and after a series of treatments gives a permanent reduction in hair. Hairs fall out gradually and the skin becomes smooth. We perform the treatment with the Asclepion Mediostar Monolith laser on the face and body.
We choose the plan to suit your skin and hair colour, and the number of treatments depends on the area. You usually need 8-10 treatments at intervals matched to the hair growth cycle. After the series some hairs may grow back, for example with hormonal changes. In that case maintenance treatments are enough.
Before the treatment do not pluck or wax the hairs, because the laser works on the follicle, which must be in the skin. Shave the area the day before. Do not sunbathe for a few weeks before the treatment.
Treatments that help
What you can do every day
- Shave in the direction of hair growth, not against the grain
- Use shaving foam for better glide
- Exfoliate regularly to minimise irritation after shaving and ingrown hairs
When to book a consultation
Book a consultation if you have moles or skin changes in the treatment area, take photosensitising medication or are pregnant. We will assess whether the treatment is safe. If the hair growth appeared suddenly or is getting worse quickly, see a doctor first.
Frequently asked questions
After a series of treatments the reduction is permanent, but hormonal changes can make some hairs grow back and maintenance treatments will then be needed.
Usually 8-10, depending on the body area and the colour of your hair and skin. We set the exact number at the consultation.
The sensations can be unpleasant, similar to a snap of a rubber band. We adjust the intensity to your sensitivity.
It works best on dark hair. Light, grey and very fine hairs respond less well, so at the consultation we assess whether the treatment will be effective.
The information is general and does not replace a consultation with a doctor.
